This evocative piece by Slovak modernist Ján Novák utilizes urgent, expressive ink outlines layered with broad, fluid washes of watercolor. The muted, earth-toned palette is dominated by an ochre sky and a sudden, deep blue chasm, creating an intense atmosphere of psychological tension and mythic isolation. Created during the tumultuous years of World War II just before Novák's tragic death in 1944.

Ján Novák

Ján Novák was a Slovak modernist painter and illustrator whose brief life and career left a poignant mark on mid-century Slovak art. Born in 1921, his most prolific artistic output occurred during the dense, tumultuous years of World War II (specifically between 1940 and 1944). Not much else is known about his life, except what can be drawn from his extensive catalog of expressive, and deeply psychological figurative art and illustration.
