This iconic 1882 lithograph presents an uncanny, disembodied eye transformed into a hot-air balloon drifting upward from a rugged, dark landscape. Redon’s masterful use of velvety chiaroscuro tones creates a stark contrast between the heavy, textured terrain below and the glowing, ethereal space of the sky. Haunting, poetic, and beautifully surreal, this historic print serves as a striking centerpiece for spaces that embrace avant-garde history and dark, symbolic art.
Odilon Redon
Odilon Redon was a French Symbolist artist who initially gained recognition for his eerie, monochrome charcoal drawings and lithographs known as noirs. Around the turn of the 20th century, he radically transitioned into vibrant oil and pastel works that combined natural elements with eastern religious themes and Japanese stylistic influences. Characterized by a dreamlike, semi-abstract aesthetic, his innovative later work ultimately served as an important precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
